Among transgendered or gender queer authors, it is a common practice to adopt a feminine or masculine alter ego, although it is not unheard of for a writer to use his or her own given name. Such erotica takes the form of novels, short stories, poetry, true-life memoirs, and sex manuals. Transgressive sexual fantasies are a common feature of the genre, on such themes as prostitution, orgies, homosexuality, sado-masochism, cross-dressing, incest and many other taboo subjects and fetishes. The stories may or may express in explicit language. Satire and social criticism are other common elements.
